Managing time effectively is essential, but so is knowing your limits in a given day, week or month.
That’s something Beau Olson, our Lead Dad of the Week from Winter Park, Florida, reminds himself about on a regular basis. He met his wife Marisa seven years ago. They’ve been married for the last three, and now have a 2-year-old and a 6-month-old.
Like many dads before him, Beau said he could have never imagined what being a parent, husband and a director at an asset management firm would look like all together. He’s not complaining. All three are great; it’s just sometimes swirling everything together all at once can be hectic.
One tip: trusting in your delegation.
“We have a big reliance on delegation and trust, and that means trusting that we collectively have to accomplish certain things day to day and week to week and month to month,” he said.
And since all planning and no play isn’t sustainable, Beau said he pushes his wife, a teacher, and himself to find time to do what they like – and liked before children.
“My wife being home now with the baby, I’ve been pushing her to find time to prioritize herself,” he said. “I enjoy getting outside and being on the golf course, even if it’s taking little bits of time where you can get them. You can’t always fit in 18 or 9 holes, but you can chip and putt for a little while.”
He also knows what’s too much right now. While he likes competing in triathlons and wants to do an Iron Man, he said is not the time for that.
That’s where prioritizing and being realistic need to come together. Welcome, Beau, to The Company of Dads!
